How much can I sue my landlord in Tennessee for unlawful holding of my security deposit?
I have rented my house in Nashville, Tennessee for about five years, and recently my friend was leaving here when he accidentally backed into the air conditioning unit. It did no damage to the A/C unit other than bending a small dust shield, but I felt the need to contact my landlord nonetheless. After a month of asking him, he finally coughed up a reciept that he printed off the computer... no company letterhead, no company name, address, or number, it just said "Daryl Spicer" (my landlord) as the customer, my address, and $75. under the total. My fiancee cut him a check for the damage, and when I got the bogus reciept I hit the roof! This month I cut him a check for $75 less, and said that I will be happy to give him the rest when he gives me a legitimate receipt. He said that he wanted us gone by the end of the month. I have a feeling that he is going to try to withold some of my security deposit or last month rent. If this is the case, I plan to sue him. I know in some states I can sue for twice the illegally withheld money, but this varies state to state I believe. What are my rights here? Thanks a lot!
